Ruched Black Dress & Fall Duster

Fall Duster Outfit

"Autumn: The season that teaches us that changes can be beautiful."

Browns, burnt oranges, velvet! A few words to associate fall fashion this year. This duster has a little drama to it. It's something that reminds me of being in a film or have magic powers, when I'm wearing it. Something that gives an extra "umph" to the outfit. It's easy to wear and pairs easily. Even with jeans and a tank.

First Day of Autumn & Apple Picking

holding an apple in the apple orchard

Summer has officially sunset and Autumn is in full rotation! I plunged in, friends. Do you remember last year when I tried very hard to have an Adventure in Apple Picking? But the U-Pick was closed for the season. Well, I learned my lesson and I followed my own advice. I reached out to the farm 2 weeks ago to find their opening date. Guess what today was! That day!

Book Review: Chapter One (End of Summer)

Reading on the porch swing

During my recent trip out to Whidbey Island I was able to finish my summer reading list! Summers used to be a lot earlier to sit and readd. I used to have a lot more down time but since I started my job, last year, this time of year is increasingly harder to stay up and read. In short, this list is small. Over the winter, I want to read two books a month!

I've decided to start a book review series on this blog. Reason one, to keep me honest but also to keep a record for myself. In the past I started this idea, but only reviewed one book. As you can see from my previous post, I had every intention of reading a book a month and that didn't happen. This time, I've got them written in my calendar, in hopes that it'll keep me on track!

To start, I want to say that I'm a huge library supporter. If I don't get my books from the library, I try to get them at either a thrift store or borrow them from a friend. It's not that I don't believe in buying books, I definitely do! I will buy them every so often, sometimes even after I've read it and loved it.

Let's begin. Shall we?

Coupeville, WA & Original Hunter Boots

Walking the Puget Sound in Coupeville, WA
Off to a bit of a slow start today. I'm working, in real time, to get this post live for you guys. Normally I try to work a head but I'm a blogger with a full time job, that isn't blogging, so it gets squished between yoga, junior league and meet ups sometimes. Blogging is my creative outlet and this post is one of the reasons I love to do it.

My family used to take summer trips all the time. In fact, growing up, we didn't have a lot of extra money. Our family trips involved us stuffing clothes into an over night bag and packing up the ol' suburban for a long drive. Sometimes knowing the destination, sometimes spitting out ideas in the car. We'd pack our discmans and a pile of books, comic books and coloring books. It was normally in the early morning when we were forced to get up but those are the trips I remember the most. They're some of our favorite adventures!

We're all grown now. None of us kids have children or significant others, at the moment. This summer came and went quickly and it was near impossible to plan a trip but we found one weekend we could all get off so we jumped at it. Destination? Coupeville, Wa!

Shoulder Bow Jumpsuit & French Style Scarf

Julia Jordan Shoulder Bow Jumpsuit Scarf

Welcome to Queen Anne Hill, not Paris. Shocked? The location for our photoshoot was chosen because I have an unnatural obsession with Queen Anne's many and legendary staircases. Exploring Seattle has become a hobby this year. Walking every street in my neighborhood and a few sectors over is my personal challenge. This staircase is attached to the Wilcox wall which was built between 1913 and 1915. Not as old as Paris but regardless, this beautiful wall has seen a lot. Including my latest jumpsuit obsession!

The Versatile Beret

New brooch and old brooch

I suppose I could have named this post "How to change up your beret" but The Versatile Beret sounded like a great chapter of a style book.

If you haven't figured it out, this is the ultimate swap out! I picked up this Zara beret at the end of winter last year. It was on sale and I didn't like the pin that was sewn onto it. It was missing a gem stone and its also silver, which as we all know, isn't my favorite tone. I'm a gold-tone queen, all the way.

Fall Office Wear & Brown Accents

Office Wear Pencil Skirt Leopard Scarf Heels 2018

This has been a fun little challenge. I have been mapping out outfits by laying them out and taking pictures of them before wearing them. The only accessory missing from this ensemble are my Tom Ford reading glasses.

McQueen Documentary Outfit,

Per the norm, I showed up to an event exactly as the invite's dress code suggested "favorite fall trends". Well, did you see my last post on Fall Trends 2018? I'm a walking example of those trends:

1) Leopard - check
2) Hat - check check
3) Long Duster - checkkkkk

I can not be saved from fall fashion. It's my favorite time of year to be stylish and trendy. There are elements and layers you don't get with any other season. This is when real Seattle style shines.

Now, let's get to this amazing event...

Fall Trends 2018

2018 Fall Trends, Leopard Print, Hats, Long Duster Coats //

Watching the rain, hot cups of tea, snuggly blankets and layering. Lately Fall has been in the air. Maybe it's the smoke that's been tricking our minds into thinking it's the fog. The mornings feel like October and the air is so fresh and crisp in the evenings. This Fall is going to be great, I can feel it!

Perfect White Jeans & Labor Day Weekend

I Had My First Photoshoot & Here's What I Learned (Part 2 of 2)

I had my first photoshoot. Here's what I learned. Part two // peplums & pie

Welcome to the second half of my first photoshoot! What a fun ride. In my last post, we touched on a 5 key elements I learned on my first ever shoot for my blog. As previously mentioned, maintaining my blog hasn't been the hard part. My creative mind is always moving and the wheels are constantly turning but being able to capture theses moments have been increasingly difficult. Especially this summer. With Fall around the corner and the light fading fast in the morning and night, well, I wanted to come up with another solution since I love my blogging hobby so much.

I also don't want to let you guy down! So, without much more introduction, here are 5 additional key discoveries I made on my first ever photoshoot.

I Had My First Photoshoot & Here's What I Learned (Part 1 of 2)

Leaning against a wall // peplums & pie

Here at Peplums & Pie, I'm a one woman show but over the past year it's been increasingly difficult to create quality photos. Normally it's me, my tripod and 15 minutes before running out the door to catch the bus. Then there's editing. Which if you know anything about photography, can take a long time when you're not an expert.

So, this past month Peplums & Pie sought out a little help and worked with a local photographer for the first time. If you're a follower, you've probably noticed a huge difference in my photos from Warm Red Sweaters & Distressed Jeans to Denim Dress & Accessories, to my latest White Tank and Striped Beach Pants post. The difference is pretty significant and the organization is surprisingly less because I can actually have the time to organize my outfits and not be running out the door.

With that said, there were also a lot of concerns on my end. Starting with a strange moment of panic and flash backs to senior portraits in high school. Additionally a huge realization that I am not a model. Did I seek guidance and trust in my photographer? Girllll, this is the biggest learning I had from this experience. The answer is: Always trust your photographer.

So here's what I learned:

How to Shop an Anthropologie Sale Successfully

Anthropologie Summer Sale Recommendations and Montage // // Peplums & Pie

This morning, Anthopologie sent an email saying "1000+ NEW Fresh Cuts". At first, my mind went to the trash icon on my phone. To be honest, my everyday job is in Marketing. Not exactly one to fall for copy but the images in the email got me. Anthro always has the best photoshoots.

Long story short, my basket got filled with items! Don't even ask how that happened. But, before just hitting the "checkout" button, I also stopped, took a breath and found not only a strategy but gave myself some ground rules for my morning.

In short, here's: How to Shop an Anthropologie Sale Successfully.

White Tank & Striped Beach Pants

BP square neck tank with breezy beach pant from Mahina // Peplums & Pie

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to work with a local photographer with every intention of writing about my experience but life got in the way. Note to self, July and December equals work-overload. Hopefully that will allow me to cut myself a break in the future.

This weekend was the first weekend I really celebrated summer. I walked the Discovery Park trails, went on an amazing Electric Boating event with the non-profit I volunteer with and I got to attend a BBQ on the top of a rooftop deck! I love you Summer.

How to Wear all White & Pull it off

How to wear all white and pull it off // Blogger Style //

I did not mean to take a full hiatus during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year. So many fellow bloggers posted what they were hoping to get and also shop the sale early. I was one of the unlucky ones that just had to wait my turn. There has been a lack of inventory, I would say, this year than in the past. It's possibly because it was the biggest event yet. What is also is, is incentive to get the Nordstrom card.

Beside the fact that I didn't get everything on my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Catalog Preview & Favorites post. I was able to snag a few items that I'll share with all of you soon. It's been a busy few weeks but I am looking forward to committing time toward my blog from here on out.

6 Summer Lipsticks

6 summer lipsticks

Round up time! Won't lie, these are always my favorite posts to do. Some are repetitive but, let's just say that they consistently stand out and they're the true MVPs. One in particular I tend to wear all year round, you'll know if you check out my IG.

My quality of lipstick has changed a lot over the past few years. There are a lot of higher end lipsticks and lip stains in this post, compared to past. It's a weakness recently, especially the YSL matte lip stains. They stay on your lips all day. I've tested them. ALL DAY. They are high end and expensive but worth the one application.

This may be cheating too but one of these lipsticks was given to me as a sample and, it's beautiful. It's absolutely stunning and it had to go on the list because its one of those samples that stays in my handbag. It's the perfect pop of summer color. It'll blow your mind.

Let's get right into it, shall we?

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Catalog Preview & Favorites

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2018 Sneak Peek Preview and Favorites //

Though it tends to be one of the most hectic times of the year for me, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is a holiday in and of itself. Its a time where everyone sits down with their snail mailed-in catalog and circles their favorite items like its Christmas circa 1995.  The only issue is, that almost every item is circled so this list needed to be narrowed down a lot.

Happy 4th of July & a Repeat Romper

Happy 4th of July! This is the second year that I've worn a romper for our beloved nation's Independence day. Last year I wore my beautiful Loft black and white number. Oddly enough a few days later my post was featuring this pink romper. This is officially a repeat romper post but styled a little differently. I love going back and looking at old posts. I've come far.

3 Summer Perfumes & How to Choose Yours

Picture of three perfume bottles

As someone who is very particular about perfume, I can understand the hesitation to jump in and buy a new one. Not only are there particular scents that are attractive but there's also a scent sensitivity. Especially with musky flavors.

How do you go about choosing your Spring/Summer perfumes?

There are a lot of competitive perfumers in today's market. Stopping into places with a wall of aromas can not only be overwhelming but nauseating. So, here are some does and don'ts to finding your perfect eau de cologne.

Outfit of the day, Beach Lunch Lounge shirt and Madewell tote

Yes! The sun is out. It's light til 10pm and that summer glow is upon us!

BeachLunchLounge, three of my favorite words all coming together to create this miracle top. Literally, best brand name ever. There slogan is "throw on and go", which is MY favorite slogan. Pretty sure this little brand and I are going to be best friends.

Father's Day Gift Guide 2018

A father's day guide of gifts, help finding a father's day gift

Father's Day is coming in hot, friends, and I'm here with a quick little guide to help make your lives a little bit easier. This past year, my parents decided to make a huge change and move into a two bedroom apartment complex and live out their younger years all over again. They couldn't be happier in their little place. They went from a 3 door garage, 5 bedroom home with a den to a mere 1,200 sq ft. Impressive right?

With the downsize, they got rid of a lot. A LOT. My dad is a pretty simple guy. He loves the little things in life, literally. Especially since they've moved. So I stuck to the basics keeping my Dad in mind and also thinking about what my Dad loves, for yours.

Empower Women & High Waisted Black Jeans

empowered women tee with high waisted black jeans
The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. We should raise each other up. Make sure you're very courageous: be strong, be extremely kind, and above all be humble. - Serena Williams

I'm super lucky. In this life I have the privilege of an amazing support system of women. A team of smart, courageous and independent women that I have the honor to call friends. When advice is needed, I know exactly who to call. When I'm down, there's always someone to kick me and say "you can have this moment but then you need to wash your face and carry on with your day with you head held high".

Yellow Dress & Celebrations

Lush Skater Dress with denim jacket and madewell tote at Pike Place Market Seattle

Oh darling friends, thank you for bearing with me during this crazy month I've had. Have you ever had a time where you're craving nature and can't even think of being in front of a camera or being on social media? That was May. I couldn't help it. It's been beautiful outside and being outdoors, running through trails and trying to take care of myself really took presence.

Boho Vibes & That Black Jumpsuit Again...

Do you ever buy something and you think to yourself "I'm probably only going to wear this once", and then you wear it an average of 1-2 times a week? This black jumpsuit IS that purchase. No other outfit compares. There is nothing so comfortable or freeing.

2017 Seattle Fashion Week & that Jumpsuit (again)

The weekend before this last was a special little treat. I got brunch with the girls, sat on a patio, drank white wine, went to a Cinco de Mayo gathering and then got the privilege to attend this year's Seattle Fashion Week Show at the Seattle Art Museum...

Loose Floral Peplum & Pink Strap Sandals

Peplums & Pie: Loose Floral Peplum & Pink Strap Sandals // Vince Camuto Tiered Ruffle Floral Top // H&M Jeans // Nine West Pink Sandals //

Hello friends! I have so much lined up for the month of May that I might do a post on all of the amazing and exciting activities on my list. It's finally nice out. I didn't even wear a jacket today, never the less sleeves. It felt like bliss.

I'm embracing my floral side since I can't think of anything more appealing than sitting and reading a book in a garden or a park. Being outdoors is all I can think about so I try to bring that mindset to work with me. This floral silky top by Vince Camuto is sold out almost everywhere. I was able to find it at two locations so definitely hurry and grab it before it's completely gone. They do still make this top is solid colors, which I've been eyeing. They're really comfortable, airy, loose and perfect for work days when you really don't want to think.

This is a classic example of how my social media life is happier than I actually am. *laughs squeakily*

I got SO insanely sick on Sunday night. High fever, the room was spinning for hours and I could barely move all day. Then I lost my voice on Tuesday and I've sounded like the world most obnoxious squeaky mouse since! Anyone know how long it takes for your voice box to mend?

My Staple Black Leather Jacket

Nordstrom Caslon petite moto jacket // White BP Tee // Black Skinny Jeans // Black Vince Camuto Helled Sandals // YSL #10 Lipstain //

A well fitted leather jacket investment. Personally, I have three leather jackets but that's for another post. This post is on the essential black leather jacket. Why? It goes with everything! Yet, there are many styles, textures and variations of jackets. Which is why doing your research is important.

Baseball Season & A Casual Monday

Black Mariners Baseball Hat // Black Tee // BTS Jeans // Green Leather Crossbody Zara // Vince Slip ons //

Hot dogs, warm summer nights, daylight til 9pm, baseball pants, beer and our Seattle Mariners. That's right, it's baseball season! My second favorite season in Seattle because who doesn't love going to a nice n' easy family friendly event where they allow you to drink in the stands and dance to Macklemore with a moose?

Vince Camuto White Dress & Easter Sunday 2018!

Vince Camuto White Dress with Pink Nine West Sandals and a Green Leather Handbag from Zara

Happy Easter, everyone!!! It's no surprise that I love getting dressed up. It doesn't happen often but when it does it's fun to go full prep. There's normally a bit of boho vibe in my wardrobe but, like I said, it's rare to dress nice.

DIY All Natural Organic Lip Scrub: Honey & Brown Sugar

lip scrub in container

Hello Friends! I think this might be my first beauty DIY! #excitement

As many of you know, I've been trying to make my beauty routine vegan friendly and cruelty-free. It's been quite a battle finding a great face wash and an even harder time giving up my YSL lip stains.

While looking for a face wash I came across a super easy DIY lip scrub* that I am obsessed with. It's three of my favorite ingredients and the best part is, it's edible! Yep! 100% delicious. It tastes like cookie dough. That said, I recommend using your lip scrub before you brush your teeth.

Since whipping up my first batch, my routine has been to use the scrub 2-3 times a week. It depends on how dry my lips are. The winter air has been dehydrating and there's no sun-rays in our forecast until the end of the month. If that doesn't warrant a frowny face, I don't know what does.

ingredients in bowl

ingredients in bowl with jars behind it

ingredients in bowl with wisk

The recipe is painfully easy and can fill one 2oz jar and two .5oz jars. Perfect for traveling or to give to a friend, which is what I did with mine. This would make great present during the holidays or even as a spa gift basket.

I love using local honey because it's supporting your community or farmers in your area. Whenever I go to the Ballard Farmer's Market, I always try to pick some up. I used Trader Joe's Northwest Honey for this recipe because that's all I had in house at the time and it worked beautifully. I do recommend using raw honey so that you keep all of the natural properties that honey provides to your skin: moisturizing, anti-aging and tons of antioxidants.

As for the brown sugar, I mentioned TJs again because they use a turbinado sugar. I has larger crystals which nicely rub against your lips to smooth and gently peel any dry skin. It's a natural exfoliator and nice for sensitive skin. That's the reason I recommend using it.

Lastly, the coconut oil. I picked mine up at my local Safeway but I did make sure it was organic. I also used mixed mine when it was solidified. The reason it doesn't matter if its a liquid or a solid is merely due to temperature. The minute your finger or lip touches this scrub the oil will melt. Making this scrub ease to rub and taste divine.

Simply mix all three ingredients together, jar and enjoy. I highly recommend washing your hands before you begin, especially if you plan to give these to friends. I also recommend washing your hand before using the product as well. Just to keep it nice and germ-free.

High wasted "cropped" jeans. There are times when being petite isn't so glamorous. Any concert that insists upon "general admission"as "seating", or as I like to call it... standing with no space. At a company meeting and any one above 5'3 sits in front of you. The list goes on.

Cupcakes & Cashmere Maroon Dress & a Leather Jacket

WIW, facing forward

I know what it's like to see the impossible as a blogger. Especially a blogger with a full-time career, a non-profit committee chair and volunteer. I cannot imagine blogger mommys lives when mine is always packed to the brim. Life gets in the way, post move to the back burner for family matters and scheduling shoots is pushed to 5 minutes before running out the door to catch the morning bus. It's work you need to push for.

Green LUSH Slit Top and Bootcamp

Good morning! Happy New Week!

I'm walking into this week with positive vibes and extra motivation. This weekend I got to experience another crazy bootcamp class with two of my favorite people in Seattle. It was an opportunity to merge two worlds and get an insane work out in as well. Two birds, right?

Mahina Boutique Overalls & Baseball Hats

front photo

Another incredible piece from my favorite Hawaiian Boutique, Mahina. These cotton overalls are dying to come out of my closet for Spring and Summer. I'm desperately trying to pair them with sweaters and cardigans which has been working, for the most part. Today they've been paired with my Mariners cap, classic white tee and black pumps to help with my height. It's an easy and relaxed look, though I probably won't be seen at the grocery store in it. It's more of a Fri-yay attire.

Travel Bug: Where to Eat on the North Shore, Hawaii

Coconut Shrimp & Mac Salad

We all know my undying love for food. When in Rome, you eat pasta. When in Paris, you drink your cappuccinos. When in Hawaii, you eat everything. There are certain places I always go to on the North Shore.

This year was particularly fun. We tried a ton of different and unique places to eat and drink from Haleiwa to Laie. We stopped at fruit stands and a bakery that blew our minds. There was a shrimp truck that wasn't worth the time or money and an incredible burger place known for bringing love, peace and family together. It was such an amazing food ride and we just rode the wave.

Denim Dress & Accessories ... Lots and Lots of Accessories

facing forward

If it's possible to own anymore accessories than I already do, I doubt it, than I will need a closet instead of a jewelry box. It's a love I shared with my belated Memére and therefore, I have a lot of pride in my collection. I collect jewelry and accessories from all over the world and locally at thrift stores. This past summer began my collection of amber necklaces which I find an excuse to wear at all cost. Though, very heavy, they are lovely and hold memories from my trip to Morocco.

Hunter Green Dress and Floral Booties

facing forward in dress, vest and booties

Hello, gems. I don't know how I survived my first week back after my vacation. It seemed like the weekend would never get here but here we are and it feel so good to kick back. While I was on my trip, I rare sat down unless I was lounging at the beach. Even then I would get up and swim every 20 minutes or so. Being outside in the sunshine did a number on my health for the week. I'm so thankful for being blessed enough to even take a trip, never the less soak up that Vitamin D.

Travel Bug: 5 Ways to Live Like a Local in Oahu, Hawaii

Though not a Hawaiian local permanently, my heart is always with the land and the people who resign on the islands.  For some reason my obsession with the tropical climate, surfer style and Aloha vibes came on strongly when I was in my teens. Back when everyone wore puka shells and JT had ramen hair. My first trip was for a High School Band competition. It took two years of hoarding my allowance money, baby sitting savings and football concession stand raising. I remember the trip well enough to tell you: I didn't listen to our chaperones, stuck to the tourist attractions and I was burnt to a crisp by day 2. Above all, I remember paradise.
